2 SEO tricks when cross-promoting blog posts to Medium
If you are cross-promoting the post to Medium and you want the SEO credit to go to your posts on the external site over your Medium post, then you’ll want to check out the following two tricks.
Note: you will need an account set up with Google Webmaster Tools, and connected to your website. If you’re serious about SEO, this is a must, anyway.
#1 Manually crawl your page and ensure it’s indexed it
First step is to ensure that your website’s version of the blog post is indexed properly. Even with a sitemap, there may be several pages of your website that aren’t fully indexed in Google, especially if your website has low overall traffic.
Here’s how to prevent this issue:
- In Google Webmaster Tools, search the post URL in the “inspect any URL” search bar at the top of the page. If you see “URL is not on Google,” this is obviously indicative that you have an issue.
- Click “test live URL.”
- Once you have run a live test, Google should find the page and give you a green checkmark, saying “URL is available to Google.” If the URL is not available, you will need to ensure it is published and accessible to Google crawlers (e.g. there are no “noindex” robots files in the page).
