WHAT IS BUDDHISM ABOUT?
Buddhism is a religion and philosophy that originated in ancient India. The ultimate goal of Buddhism is to achieve enlightenment and to end the cycle of reincarnation.
The most important teachings of Buddhism can be summarized as follows:
- The Four Noble Truths: These are the foundation of Buddhist teachings and state that suffering is an inherent part of existence, that the cause of suffering is desire and attachment, that it is possible to end suffering by breaking the cycle of reincarnation through the attainment of Nirvana, and that this can be achieved by following the Eightfold Path.
- The Eightfold Path: This is a set of guidelines for how to live one’s life in a way that will lead to the end of suffering. The eight aspects of the path include right understanding, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.
